Coming to the U.S. from Germany in 2007, my wife and I started a small outreach in Chicago, which resulted in a few people coming to faith. That resulted in the birth of our congregation. Today it consists of 33 members. At first, it was only the 4 of us. We came together every week, had Bible studies, and prayed together for more people to join us. Shortly after, we started inviting friends, co-workers, and family members. We also started getting to know more people in the Russian-Jewish community. We started getting together in a small northern suburb of Chicago, where there was a large Russian-Jewish community, but no congregation or outreach. As time passed, people heard of us from friends and became interested. Today we are a big family and are seeing more and more people coming to us.

Son of David Congregation in Montgomery County, Maryland is 27 years old. It was planted by Chosen People Ministries’ staff and remains a part of the ministry’s work. We are multi-ethnic and multi-racial with the goal of reaching the Jewish population of our area with the Good News of the Jewish Messiah and discipling believers to do the same. Our services feature messages from both the Hebrew and Greek scriptures, worship and praise dance, and of course, prayer. Our desire is to lift up Messiah Yeshua so that He may draw people to Himself.

We began meeting in our home with a small group of Jewish believers for worship, Bible study, and fellowship. As people began inviting friends and word got out about our meetings we began to run out of space in our home. We were then able to find a local hall that would rent us space a couple of towns over from us. We began celebrating Shabbat twice per month and also celebrated all the Levitical holidays. We are now meeting in a local church fellowship hall and have met close to 200 Jewish and Gentile believers who have visited us over the past 4-plus years, many of whom participate regularly. We continue to operate as a Messianic fellowship rather than a congregation. Our focus of late has been on evangelism to the Jewish community and we are exploring creative ways in which to go about that work.

Sha’ar Adonai in New York City was birthed immediately after 9/11. Steve and Carol Fenchel were scheduled to fly back to New York four days after that tragedy. When they arrived they knew the Lord wanted them to start this much needed Messianic congregation. Knowing that the timing was essential and thoroughly prearranged by the Lord, they set out to start the congregation, Sha’ar Adonai. The Fenchels knew that “unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain,” and even through many trials, the Lord has allowed the congregation to flourish abundantly. Many Jewish people, as well as Gentile Christians, have helped to build this house of worship, prayer, and proclamation of the Jewish Messiah who we serve. Our weekly services and mid-week Bible studies are now streamed live on Facebook and we currently have about 300 people who receive our message weekly.

Beth Sar Shalom Brooklyn (the House of the Prince of Peace) was planted and launched with a Rosh HaShanah service on September 24, 2014. The planting of the congregation coincided with the opening of Chosen People Ministries’ Charles L. Feinberg Messianic Center the same month. Part of the vision for ministry in the Messianic Center includes establishing a healthy faith community where Jewish believers can be discipled and grow in their faith, and Jewish seekers can hear and experience the Gospel of Jesus in a Jewish setting. Beth Sar Shalom serves this purpose. Despite Brooklyn’s vast Jewish population, there were no English-speaking Messianic Congregations in the borough before Beth Sar Shalom began. The congregation is led by Chosen People Ministries staff members, Rich Flashman, Joseph Ryan, and Robert Walter.

Brooklyn’s only Russian-speaking Messianic congregation, Gesher HaShamayim, started out in my home in 2007 as a Bible study group of about 6-10 people. Soon, Chosen People Ministries started looking for a center to rent. It was a very hard process, as most landlords did not want to even to talk with us as soon as they found out that we were Messianic. Most landlords in our neighborhood in Brooklyn are Orthodox Jews or had pressure from the Orthodox Jewish community. This process continued for almost 2 years, but finally, we found a place on East 18th Street and Kings Highway on the second floor. A synagogue happened to be right next to us, which we did not realize until later. We were happy to have a good relationship with our new landlord who was a Russian Jewish unbeliever. We were friends with him and his wife for many years even though there were a lot of protests and persecution because of our presence in the community. At the same time we started meetings in Central New Jersey, as many new families whom I ministered to before moved there.
We moved to the Feinberg Center in the fall of 2014, which has been a blessing for the congregation and all center activities. Gesher HaShamayim meets on Saturday afternoons. We have a drug and alcohol support group on Monday evening and a Bible study on Thursday evening. We are praying about meeting in Central New Jersey again on Saturday mornings!

Congregation Yeshua Ben David was the second Messianic Congregation founded by Pastor Jeff and Kathy Kipp in Pittsburgh and began in March 2005. We meet every Sat. morning at 10:30 in the heart of the Jewish community in Squirrel Hill. We are a Messianic Congregation of redemptive love and healing emphasizing the Jewishness of Yeshua and the Jewish roots of our faith. We are a Messianic community that believes in preaching the gospel and reaching the lost sheep of the house of Israel, and also believes in discipleship and ministering healing and restoration to all who come. We are not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of salvation for all who believe, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. (Romans 1:16) We celebrate all the Jewish holidays and holy days and host various bible studies and activities throughout the month. All visitors are welcome. Come and join us. Sar Shalom Fellowship was born in August 1998. It was a congregational plant of Son of David Congregation and was led by Dennis Karp. After brief periods of time in Herndon and Reston, the congregation landed in Sterling, in northern Virginia. Neal and Kim Surasky joined the congregation in 2005. Dennis and Tina Karp announced their move to Israel in 2006, and Neal was inaugurated as the rabbi in 2007. In 2008, as the congregation grew, the Hebrew name of the congregation was adopted as the official name, Kehilat Sar Shalom. The congregation moved to its current home in Leesburg, VA in 2011. The congregation features Messianic praise and worship music, a Torah service, and a message from the Word, with the goal of ministering to the Jewish community in northern Virginia.

Kehillath Tsion is Vancouver, Canada’s first Messianic Jewish congregation and was founded in 1986 by Elias Nessim, with the help of his son, Daniel Nessim as worship leader. Growing out of a monthly Chavurah for Jewish believers in Yeshua the congregation rapidly outgrew the house it met in. In those years, dozens of Jewish people were coming to faith in Yeshua as Messiah, and some were passionate about the need to establish an independent congregation where they could express their Jewish faith in a Jewish way. While Daniel moved to Seattle in 1992, Kehillath Tsion continued to thrive under the leadership of Elie and his good friend Lionel Leslie and has become known as a congregation with a particularly strong teaching ministry. After serving with Chosen People Ministries in Seattle and then London, England, Daniel, upon returning to Seattle, was invited to take up leadership in the congregation and currently commutes to Vancouver to teach and preach.”

Kehila, a startup congregation in Los Angeles, began three years ago. The word Kehila may sound strange, but it conveys one of the oldest concepts: Community. It derives from a Hebrew word describing a tribe gathered around a shared identity and a shared purpose. It started as a dream of Scott and Dana Nassau. Initially, the congregation consisted of a small group of people gathering in their living room to talk about how to make the Gospel a force for good in Los Angeles. It was a group comprised of Jewish and Gentile young people who were interested in participating in a community of Jesus followers that makes a difference in the city. Over the last three years, Kehila has slowly grown. During this time the congregation has moved five times, but Kehila’s core commitment is to be a community, united by their shared identity as followers of Jesus. In a city characterized by isolation and loneliness, Kehila believes community is crucial. It is not a congregation defined by a location or an event, but as a community who seeks to live out their faith together. They seek to be a family where each person finds a spiritual home by experiencing the journey of faith together. Kehila shapes community around pursuing Jesus and loving Los Angeles.
