Handprint Menorah

Happy Hanukkah! To celebrate this special holiday, grab a few paint supplies, print out our fun craft PDF, and enjoy this craft with your kids. The great thing about this craft is that it can be done very simply without the below supplies by printing out the attached craft pdf and tracing your child’s hands instead of using paint. Or you can get super crafty and use paint and extra decorative touches.

SUPPLY LIST:

  • Blue construction paper
  • Blue & yellow paint
  • Paint brush
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Single hole punch
  • 12 inches of string or ribbon

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Print craft PDF. We suggest printing on cardstock paper, but any paper will do.
  2. Cut out each of the items from the craft PDF.
  3. Glue circle onto construction paper.
  4. Paint one hand blue & stamp onto the white background of the circle.
  5. Repeat with the opposite hand making sure to overlap the thumbs in the middle because the menorah only needs 9 candles.
  6. To create the candle flames, you can either cut out the sparkly candle flames included in the craft PDF or you can use yellow paint. If using paint, dip your fingertip into the yellow paint and stamp a yellow print on top of each of the 9 fingers or “candles”. If using the sparkly candle flames, cut out the 9 flames and glue above each finger.
  7. Glue the “Happy Hanukkah” ribbon and stars onto the paper.
  8. Create two holes at the top of the page with a hole punch and tie your ribbon to each of those holes.
  9. Now you have a fun craft Menorah! Happy Hanukkah!

Potato Latkes

Potato latkes are a favorite food during the festival of Hanukkah. We celebrate the miracle of the holiday by cooking foods in oil in remembrance of the oil that was used to consecrate the temple, which lasted eight days instead of only one.

Ingredients:

  • 4 large potatoes – peeled and grated
  • 1 large onion – peeled and grated
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour (or matzah meal)
  • 2 tsp. kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 cup of vegetable oil
  • 4 oz. of sour cream
  • 4 oz. of applesauce

Instructions:

  1. Place the grated potato and onion in a colander and press lightly to remove most of the moisture and let stand 30 minutes.
  2. Place the potato mixture in a bowl and add the eggs and mix it in with your hands.
  3. Add the flour and mix thoroughly.
  4. Add the salt and pepper.
  5. Take an ice cream scoop of the potato mixture and place in your hands and then form a round patty (latke). Repeat 8 times and place the patties on a baking sheet.
  6. Heat ½ cup of oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  7. Place 4 latkes in the skillet and cook for 3 minutes or until the bottom is a golden brown color.
  8. Turn the latkes over and cook another 3 minutes.
  9. When the latkes are done, place them on a paper towel to absorb some of the oil.
  10. Add the remaining oil into the skillet and cook the other 4 latkes just like above.
  11. Take one latke and put it on a plate and serve it with a dollop of sour cream and applesauce.

Yield:  8 servings
